O vice-presidente do Malawi, Saulos Klaus Chilima, de 51 anos, morreu em um acidente aéreo. A informação foi confirmada pelo presidente do país africano, Lazarus Chakwera, logo após os destroços da aeronave terem sido encontrados nesta terça-feira (11).
“Estou profundamente triste, lamento informar a todos que se tornou uma terrível tragédia. A equipe de busca e resgate encontrou a aeronave perto de uma colina… eles a encontraram completamente destruída e sem sobreviventes ”, disse Chakwera.
A aeronave deixou a capital Lilongwe na manhã de segunda-feira (10), mas não conseguiu pousar no aeroporto de Mzuzu, como previsto. Em um discurso à nação, o presidente afirmou que o avião recebeu ordem de retornar à capital, mas saiu do radar.
Chakwera informou ainda que a aeronave – que transportava outras nove pessoas, além do vice-presidente – foi encontrada em uma parte montanhosa da Floresta Chikangawa.

A causa do acidente pode ter sido o mau tempo, conforme divulgado pelas autoridades locais. Todavia, uma investigação foi aberta para apurar o caso.
